Entrance to Savernake Hospital

Entrance to Savernake Hospital

Friends of Savernake have a long history of volunteering in the hospital. Prior to the “League of Friends, as they were known, being established in 1958 there was a great deal of voluntary work and support being given, indeed until it was absorbed into the NHS Savernake relied on the generosity of the community. Maybe the most notable “volunteer” was Matron Lavington who gave her services free between 1919-1937.  Certainly beyond the call of duty!

Volunteering now

Volunteer work in a hospital is probably one of the most rewarding jobs you could ever have.  It’s diverse, it’s fun and you will be truly appreciated.  You can quickly become absorbed into a team or you can work more independently – according to the hospital needs and your own interests and abilities.

Volunteers are regarded as an essential and vital part of the services within a hospital – they have always been held in high regard – but nowadays there is training and support on offer as well.  You are treated very much as a staff member and accordingly, are expected to behave in that way.

All you need is a willingness to help and a few hours to spare – preferably regular hours – per month.  This could be as little as an hour per week but your reliability is very much appreciated and becomes depended upon.  Often “school hours only” schedules can be accommodated.

What can you do?

The work can be in clinics, on the ward or in administration – everything from working directly with patients, giving help at meal times or completing menu sheets, to assisting staff such as Physiotherapists or the Ward Clerk. The jobs are many and varied.

Whatever your interests or strengths the Volunteer Co-ordinator will try and match you to a job that is suitable and enjoyable for you.  Younger volunteers can sometimes be accommodated and of course if you are thinking of training for work within the NHS, voluntary work can be included in your CV.  All good experience!
