About Savernake

This is a guide to services provided – however, things change!  If in doubt please contact Savernake Hospital Main Reception on 01672 517200

A friendly face on Reception is always reassuring.

Reception

Although the MIU and Day Hospital are currently closed, there is still plenty going on in the hospital.  We need to dispel the myth that the Hospital is no longer functioning. It is!

There is always a friendly welcome at Reception and help on hand if you are not sure where to go.  The new Friends Shop run by volunteers,  is opposite the Reception desk and stocks a range of toiletries, stationery, cards, daily papers, gifts, goodies and more. The trolley shop visits Ailesbury Unit every morning Monday to Friday. Shop opening hours are 11.30am-3.30pm and can be contacted in those hours directly on 01672 517317.

Out of Hours Service:
When your GP is not available in the evening or at weekends, you can access advice or a doctor through the Out of Hours Service.  Call your usual GP number and follow the instruction – you may be diverted automatically. Wiltshire Medical Service deal with all out of hours calls.  They use Savernake Hospital as a base at certain times and you may be seen there. The Out of Hours number is 0300 111 5717.  You can also call NHS Direct 0845 4647 at any time.

Inpatients – Ailesbury Unit:

Rehab Room

Rehab Room

There are 24 beds currently open  for elderly people. Some beds are in single rooms with en-suite facilities but no rooms have more than 4 beds.
There’s a dedicated rehabilitation area on the ward, an “independent living” area for patients to try out the skills they need to go home plus a relative’s overnight room.

Patients are encouraged to eat together at the table

Eating together

A doctor is present 9am-5pm Mon – Fri who works under a visiting Consultant Physician from Swindon & Marlborough NHS Trust. There are regular ward rounds.

Patients are encouraged to eat in the communal Dining Area and can also use a sitting room with a balcony that looks into the treetops.

A welcoming familiar face to regulars in the Out Patient Dept

Outpatient Departments & Clinics:

There are a surprising number of out patient clinics run from Savernake, saving patients from making the journey to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.  Bringing care closer to home and being welcomed by familiar faces are just two of the aspects very much appreciated by patients.

Mr Richard Glass - Consultant Surgeon from GWH in Out Patient Clinic

Mr Richard Glass - Consultant

Consultants from the Great Western Hospital travel to Savernake to see their patients.  This is a well organised system that is certainly preferred by the patients who tell us they even choose to wait a little longer for an appointement if they can be seen at Savernake!  Nothing against GWH but the trip to Swindon topped off by the huge car park where you fight for a space and then walk miles is not very appealing – especially to elderly folk or those with children.  Hope all the Consultants and other visiting medics know how much they are appreciated.

Please note that the X-ray service, since the closure of the MIU, has been reduced to a number of sessions a week. The timing is flexible to coincide with outpatient clinics that require this service.  X-ray facilities are available for the local GP referrals and patients in the wards. The X-ray service is digitally linked to the Great Western Hospital.

Neighbourhood Team Base:
The team is made up of Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Rehabilitation Support Workers, who treat most of the patients in their own homes.  This scheme enables patients to be discharged sooner but the care required can be continued.  It is an amalgamation and extension of District Nurses and Community Therapists working as one team. The base at Savernake allows team members to keep in close contact with each other.
