Savernake Hospital Main reception
Although the MIU and Day Hospital are currently closed, there is still plenty going on in the hospital. We need to dispel the myth that the Hospital is no longer functioning. It is!
There is always a friendly welcome at Reception and help on hand if you are not sure where to go. The new Friends Shop run by volunteers, is opposite the Reception desk and stocks a range of toiletries, stationery, cards, daily papers, gifts, goodies and more. The trolley shop visits Ailesbury Unit every morning Monday to Friday. Shop opening hours are 11.30am-3.30pm and can be contacted in those hours directly on 01672 517317.
Out of Hours Service:
From July 2011 the Out of Hours service will be based at Savernake Hospital from 6.30pm to midnight on weekdays, and from 8am to midnight at weekends. When your GP is not available in the evening or at weekends, you can access advice or a doctor through the Out of Hours Service on 0300 111 5717. Wiltshire Medical Service deal with all out of hours calls.
You can also call NHS Direct 0845 4647 at any time.
For further information go to www.wiltshirepct.nhs.uk
Inpatients – Ailesbury Unit:
On the Ailesbury Unit at Savernake Hospital, there are 31 beds currently open for elderly people. Some beds are in single rooms with en-suite facilities but no rooms have more than 4 beds.
There’s a dedicated rehabilitation area on the ward, an “independent living” area for patients to try out the skills they need to go home plus a relative’s overnight room.
A doctor is present 9am-5pm Mon – Fri who works under a visiting Consultant Physician from Swindon & Marlborough NHS Trust. There are regular ward rounds.
Patients are encouraged to eat in the communal Dining Area and can also use a sitting room with a balcony that looks into the treetops.
Cotswold House Unit
Cotswold House, the Eating Disorders Unit, opened on September 1st 2008 on the ground floor of the hospital. For more information go to:

Outpatient Departments & Clinics:
There are a surprising number of outpatient clinics run from Savernake, saving patients from making the journey to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon. Bringing care closer to home and being welcomed by familiar faces are just two of the aspects very much appreciated by patients.
Outpatient appointments are often made through the ‘Choose & Book’ scheme. Let Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) know if your GP has told you that a Consultant is available at Savernake but ‘Choose and Book’ sends you an appointment for elsewhere, even when you have requested Savernake as your choice. Click here to visit the PALS website.
Clinics include:
| Podiatry
Speech and Language Chronic Wound (includes Leg Ulcers) Diabetic Retinal Screening Physiotherapy Elderly Audiology Children’s & Adolescent Services Dermatology Radiography (X-ray) |
Diabetic
Ear Nose & Throat Gynaecology Neurology Opthalmology Orthopaedics Paediatric Rheumatology Urology |
Consultants from the Great Western Hospital travel to Savernake to see their patients. This is a well organised system that is certainly preferred by the patients who tell us they even choose to wait a little longer for an appointment if they can be seen at Savernake! The trip to Swindon, topped off by the huge car park where you fight for a space and then walk miles, is not very appealing, especially to elderly folk or those with children. We hope all the Consultants and other visiting medics know how much they are appreciated.
Please note that the X-ray service, since the closure of the MIU, has been reduced to a number of sessions a week. The timing is flexible to coincide with outpatient clinics that require this service. X-ray facilities are available for the local GP referrals and patients in the wards. The X-ray service is digitally linked to the Great Western Hospital.
Mental Health clinics at Savernake Hospital include
- Clinics for Adult psychiatric patients
- Outpatient clinics for older adults with mental health problems
- Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services
- Drug & Alcohol Services Outpatient appointments
- Art therapy sessions
Savernake Hospital is a base for a Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) who visit adults in the community
The Neighbourhood Team is made up of Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Rehabilitation Support Workers, who treat most of the patients in their own homes. This scheme enables patients to be discharged sooner but the care required can be continued. It is an amalgamation and extension of District Nurses and Community Therapists working as one team. The base at Savernake allows team members to keep in close contact with each other.
The hospital is also a base for: Health Records & School Nurses, Health Visitors & WCC Social Service Team, Dentistry Admin
The café opens on to a lovely patio garden which was a gift from The Rotary Club. It’s a peaceful place enjoyed by staff, patients and visitors alike. Anyone is welcome to use the cafe or garden, the opening times are 8.30am to 3pm, Monday to Friday.
